To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
Some folks sent me mail asking for the 10m repeater frequencies, but
for some reason or another some of my mail replies got bounced back as
undeliverable. So here's the frequencies:
(Input/Output)
29.520/29.620
29.540/29.640
29.560/29.660
29.580/29.680
Of course they're all FM, so you need an HF rig with FM and split
capabilities to use them.

I'm sure this will have a 'positive, un-biased' effect towards spectrum
allocation. So much for no 'special interest groups' in the Clinton
administration....

sure. homebrew is one thing. what you tended to see in the typical
promotional blurb of the day was something that might make a long time ham
have an orgasm but for someone looking into getting license it was overload -
"I gotta have a 75 foot tower, a stack of monoband beams and a Whole Roomful
of equipment just to get on the air?.
it was sorta like that old "stay in school" PSA that broadcasters ran to
death. when it was new, it was to show that if you stayed in school and got
your diploma you'd get a nice car, nice clothes, etc. the only problem was it
was never updated so that by the 70s it made it look like if you stayed in
school you'd get a '63 Corvair for your trouble and have to wear very uncool
clothes...
that was the problem with the "would you like to talk to the owner of this
fine station in japan?" sort of pictures. it would be more effective to show
a modest, modern looking station (here's the radio (say a TR-3), outside,
here's the wire antenna...). the old old film "the world of amateur radio" i
think it was called, did the same thing. we start with roy listening to a CB
and then we do a truck and pan to another station with twin CX-7A's, linear
amps and a "christmas" tree a mile high outside...."the new world of amateur
radio" was better yet, and i think the CQ video tapes are pretty much right on
(although the animator did use a KWM-2 as the model for the opening credit
animation...not that I'M complaining, mind you...)
there's nothing wrong with showing a station that's filled to the rim as well.
but it's got to be prefixed with something like "Fred's been a ham since 1970
and in his 24 years in radio has acquired quite a collection of equipment -
and it all works too!".

Subject: Kenwood TS-450S/AT or Yaesu 890 w/AT -- HELP!
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
After about 8 years off the air, I will (finally) be able to set up
a new hf station this week. Since I _have_ been off for so long, I've lost
touch with the equipment marketplace and given a _very_ tight budget ($1650
to get on the air, complete), I could use some rather up-to-date advice.
I'll be making a purchase by Wednesday, so even brief comments would be
greatly appreciated--as would an email copy of responses here (since I
receive my email via uucp link, but haven't as yet started receiving a feed
of the rec.radio.amateur.* groups and must log onto the university system to
read the news here which can make for delays in receiving messages).
I've been offered an excellent package price on both the Kenwood
TS-450S/AT (new) with built in tuner and on a (floor demo) Yaesu FT-890 with
built in tuner. I've seen (and heard) a TS-450S/AT before--but since I live
in the middle of nowhere (i.e., rather far from any ham shops), I haven't
had a chance to see or hear the Yaesu (which is slightly better priced at
$1160). My primary concerns are signal quality and flexibility (i.e., buzzes
and whistles). The antenna tuner is pretty much a "must" since I'll be
running a relatively poor antenna system (the reason I haven't been on hf
has been antenna restrictions). Functionally, my only antenna choices are
verticals (I'm looking at the Butternut HF9VX or the MFJ-1798--feedback here
would be appreciated as well). A ground plane is out of the question (I'll
have to "hide" the antenna between two pine trees, mounted at ground level,
to be acceptable as it is--aren't mobile home parks great?), so a really
good match is out of the question. I could, of course, use a seperate tuner
(MJF-948?), but if the rig I buy has a built in option, I would rather take
advantage of it (suggestions for rigs w/o that option are appreciated).
Overall (and if someone knows of a better deal--new or store
demos--a message would be GREATLY appreciated) my budget will be spent on
either of the two rigs (with a bit more left with the Yaesu, but not enough
to matter if the Kenwood is a better rig in the opinion of current users)
coupled with the antenna, an Astron RS-35A, 100' of coax, and the shipping.
I haven't looked at ICOM or other brands, since the best offers seem to have
been on the Kenwood and the Yaesu--but I certainly wouldn't turn down a 737
at a good enough price to package it with the rest at $1650 :)
I'm also very willing to consider a used station at that price,
provided it represents a good value and is (ideally) located somewhere I can
see/try it before purchase.
Any thoughts, comments, or opinions would be extremely helpful. My
primary focus is phone, but cw quality has _some_ importance as well since
I've promised myself to get my code up to 20wpm in time to upgrade to extra
when my current license expires in early 1996 and that will take a _lot_ of
listening. Pointers to online accessible (sorry, no access to back issues of
the ham magazines in my area) reviews or subjective evaluations would
likewise be helpful--as would pointers to particularly helpful mail order
sources (my best prices so far have come from the Ham Station and Radio
Center, USA).
Thanks in advance,

so it appears the FCC is doing this....no complaint here.
will take the wind out of some of the blowhard's sails..
maybe i missed it, but i don't think there's been anything on westlink,
newsline, ARRL Letter, ARRL bulletin or other news source that i've seen yet.
would seem like a natural to also include instructions for those with code
credit who want to have a real license that shows passing code on the license
instead of holding onto the CSCE for life or the next renewal...

Never heard of this one, but I do know of someone who ran a radial wire

bragged he had the entire East Coast as his radial system. <g>

I always thought that their was some type of low voltage put down
railroad lines to check for continuity, or for signaling?

RB 331 MGT Successful RACES Units 1/3
RELEASE DATE: June 20, 1994
Successful RACES units display or have the following
characteristics and attributes:
1. Administration of the program by staff oriented to management,
not technical work.
2. Active involvement of the program participants in the on-going
week-by-week, or day-to-day, life and affairs of the agency.
3. Careful selection of the Radio Officer for skills of
management and vision as to the utilization and capabilities of
the program.
4. Acquiring the special know-how that enhances the use of a
volunteer program.
5. Asking for help, whether in procuring the right Radio Officer,
preparation of written position descriptions or general statement
of standards and expectations for participants.
6. Requiring ongoing training and participation in emergency
services nets using agency facilities for operator
familiarization and equipment testing; such as the State OES
nets.
7. Expecting program participants to equal or excel over that of
paid staff.
8. Realization of the importance of a communications reserve
under agency direction. A constant complaint from those involved
in emergency response is that "communications always fail" when
least expected, and when least prepared for that happenstance.
9. Activating a portion of the emergency communications unit
personnel at anytime that paid staff is involved with a potential
or exiting emergency.
10. Train participants not to mention government frequencies
on-the-air as they may be confidential. Instead refer to the
channel number if required to change the frequency. Also train to
refrain from making comments on-the-air pertaining to public
safety such as police or fire communications overheard on
scanning monitor receivers.

The IF output is 10.7Mhz at -80dbm. The TV video adapter has the necessary
electronics to boost it to useable levels for the TV converter. You'll
want to the 455Khz IF section and open that up, assuming you're trying
to get the approx. 50Khz wide low orbit WESAT's...

At least one comment on my boat name "Sea Cue" jumped to the conclusion
that I was somehow refering to a billiard cue.. NO! The first definition in
the dictionary I'm looking at says:
cue (kju:) 1. n. (theater) an agreed signal, usually a line or
word of dialog, for some action or speech on or off stage.
ALSO.. a hint meant to guide behavior.
So I wasn't thinking of "a long leather-tipped rod for striking the ball in
billiards and related games."

Another real outrage is over the Restricted Permit, which currently
costs $35. After the 5th, having them merely stamp a permit which
*you fill out and send to them* will cost a truly exorbitant $105.
Anybody think people will get $70 more service out of the FCC?
If you want an RP or just think you might, better get one now.

Well Dave,
Yours is the precise, uncompromising, out of date attitude that generates
hostility among amateurs. I personally resent being targeted as a child and
generally resent that type of dinosaur attitude.
Language and lingo/jargon are particular to groups, not to the society as a
whole. If a particular group wishes to recognize a particular form of
address, then so be it.
This reminds me of the juice commercials where the town elders are crying
about "moral outrage" and "abominations". Well, we are going to have our
apple-orange juice mix, regardless of your objections.
